PRONI is delighted to be hosting the launch of a specially commissioned tapestry of Titanic Quarter by Cecilia Stephens on 9 August at 1.00pm. Book your free place. all welcome.
Tapestry
The tapestry has been produced as part of our Linen Biennale taking place throughout Northern Ireland in 2018. It depicts the Linen Quarter in Belfast and some of the iconic buildings associated with the area including PRONI, the Harland & Wolff cranes and Titanic Belfast.
Cecilia was sponsored by Arts Council N.I and Lottery funding to go to Textiellab in Tilburg , Netherlands. This is a Textile museum with a studio attached that invites artists to develop designs with expert guidance using cutting-edge machinery.
Cecilia, who would normally weave on a tweed loom creating landscape wallhangings, spent a week in Holland where she was guided through the process of weaving this piece. The tapestry incorporates references to weavers once employed in the linen industry; names found in the PRONI records. The process involved a translation of Cecilia’s painting for a digitally controlled power loom.
