About

Exhibition by Heather Burgess.

“You can’t understand someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes” An expression I found myself uttering in varied ways on occasion when dealing with my diagnosis of Cancer.

In 2012 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer at the age of 32.

In response to the above, a pair of shoes for each appointment in the first year of becoming a cancer patient has been created documenting dates, feelings, information etc.

Linen fabric is used for its properties of strength, durability and history, reflecting on life as a cancer patient. You have to walk into places and situations you fear the most, that you want to run a mile from, but have no choice in facing, the strength and durability to walk that path are naturally there, but not always apparent. Now as times goes on medically I have a “history”.
