About
The old dance hall in the beautiful heritage village of Mullan, in North Monaghan is the setting for this art installation by artist Úna Curley.
Her work with flax, linen and rushes stem from her research into the human side of flax farming, starting on her grandparents’ flax farm near Mullan village. Through it, she discovered the community effort involved in gathering the flax and the importance of the rushes and making the rush-bands for tying up the flax bundles.
Until the early 20th century the village Flax Mill was thriving and had an international reputation for the manufacture of Bullock Irish Serge. It fell into disuse and in 1924 been turned into a shoe factory making “boots for farmers by the sons of farmers”. The village had remained virtually unchanged until the village was purchased in total and is now being sensitively restored along heritage guidelines while the mill is again a hive of activity.
