A special screening of The Warp, the Weft, and the Weaver at Carnegie Oldpark! This documentary is a tale of passion and endurance, it gives visibility and value to the ancient craft and to the men and women, more often unheard or unheard of, whose labour at the loom had raised it to global dominance.

At the conclusion of this showing attendees will have the opportunity to ask Deborah questions about her film.

This FREE event will be take place at the historic Carnegie Oldpark Library building. Carnegie Oldpark first opened its doors back in 1906 and served as a center point of the local community for over one hundred years until its closure in 2010. Now 15 years later we are working hard to bring this building back to life as a Centre For Weaving that will celebrate Belfast’s rich weaving history and provide space for weavers to work, collaborate, and learn.

Overview of the BBC Documentary
Master handloom weaver Deborah White is working to restore a 200-year-old Jacquard loom, once used to produce fine damask linens for European royalty. Now decayed and dismantled, the loom represents both a technical and historical challenge. With no manual and little guidance, Deborah gathers a team of skilled craftspeople—a carpenter, wheel maker, saddler, blacksmith, and loom restorer—to help revive it. As she pieces the machine together, she also uncovers the deep Ulster-Scots weaving heritage linking Ireland and Scotland, tracing the loom’s story through centuries of craftsmanship, migration, and shared industry.
