Evaluation critically examines a program.

Its purpose is to make judgements about a program, to improve effectiveness, and/or to inform programming decisions.

Both the 2018 and the 2023 Linen Biennales were independently evaluated against each programme’s objectives.

  • 2018

    The inaugural Linen Biennale in 2018 included over 80 events: exhibitions, tours, talks and performances in locations from mills to museums that celebrated the richness of our linen heritage here in Northern Ireland and reached out to friends overseas.

  • 2023

    The Biennale included over 100 events and worked with over 50 delivery partners who supported the hosting and programming of events. The programme took place in venues across Northern Ireland and attracted over 10,000 visitors.

Building on the achievements of the inaugural Linen Biennale, the 2023 edition enhanced its reach and expanded the diversity of participants.

A major focus was placed on extending the Biennale’s reach to communities and individuals traditionally underrepresented in heritage experiences, often due to socio-economic disadvantages or geographical constraints.

  • Reached 7 out of NI’s 9 Local Council Districts

  • Featured contibutions by 100+ professionals*

  • Included 600+ participants

  • Amassed audeinces of over 10,000 people!

    * artists, designers, makers, and professionals working in the arts, industry and heritage sectors.

  • 95% reported gaining new knoweldge

  • 96% were inspired to learn more about Linen & Flax

  • 62% felt they developed or enhanced skills

Overall, feedback from the 2023 paints a vivid picture of an impactful and well-received programme of events. Participants in particular noted the opportunity to learn new skills and share stories relating to personal heritage and experience.

We could not have done it alone so we are particuarly happy to report that of all those many partners and colaberators:

  • 100% were satisfied with the Linen Biennale 2023.

  • 85% found new audeinces

  • 73% developed links in the creative sector!

The team was widely acknowledged for being not only supportive but also offering proactive assistance to partners. Collaborators noted the impressive level of support throughout the process, emphasising timely information, on-site assistance, and active involvement in ensuring successful events. The team's support for specific events and exhibitions, their attendance at launches, and their efficiency under tight timelines were appreciated.
